Wardop principles rarely hold true for complex, congested traffic and transit networks. Due to events, accidents, stochasticity of traffic, non-deterministic travel behavior etc. In this session we will focus on identifying, reproducing, predicting and controlling the network not in equilibrium. This may refer to data mining techniques, travel behavior models, assignment models, information systems, traffic control system to extend the classic and mathematically solid User Equilibrium.

Data on public transport systems is collected via numerous ways. This refers to location, ride time and occupancy of public transport vehicles along with passenger trips data (e.g. from smart cards). In this session we aim to understand and systematize how this data can be used to improve public transport design and control. In particular we are interested in :
  • using historical and real-time ride time data in scheduling
  • using passenger count data and smart card data in network design
  • modelling transit system performance using big ITS data
  • planning for typical and extremal states of transit network

In recent years, a continuous increase in the group of Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) traffic (bicycles, motorcycles, scooters) is observed. Therefore, it is necessary to develop solutions that allow for the coexistence of VRUs and motorized vehicles in a safe and effective manner. However, cooperative intelligent transport system (ITS) and technologies that include VRUs are quasi-inexistent and need to be develop.
This special session aims at:
  • new technologies and ITS as tools for better assessment of road safety and traffic performance of VRU and motorized vehicles, in mixed traffic
  • modelling, understanding and assessing the impact of ITS solutions on VRUs’ safety and traffic performance.
  • interaction assessment between VRUs and motorized vehicles, application of ITS to improve road safety
  • trajectory identification of road users
  • monitoring of VRUs and its impact on traffic and road safety

Testing of autonomous vehicles on roads is becoming more frequent.As a result, it is expected that there will be a change in the number of accidents and traffic conditions. The impact of autonomous vehicles on road safety is difficult to estimate due to their absence in traffic. This requires the development of new methods of road safety analysis taking into account autonomous vehicles. The transition period of mixed traffic of autonomous and regular vehicles and the impact of vehicles on vulnerable road users is particularly important.
This special session aims at:
  • providing information on the implementation of modern solutions in the field of autonomous vehicles and their traffic parameters;
  • identification of potential research gaps and the presentation of methods for estimating road safety, in various scenarios with autonomous vehicles
  • evaluation of road solutions taking into account the impact of autonomous vehicles on road safety and traffic performance.

While traffic assignment originated around the congestion and its effects on route choice, crowding in transit systems historically received smaller attention. However, modern transit systems are becoming more crowded and passengers are becoming more quality aware and informed in real-time. This calls for deeper understanding of the crowding phenomena and its implications on transit system performance and passenger travel behavior. We invite to this session papers related to travel behavior in presence of crowding, assignment models for crowded networks, information systems including crowding, and related issues.
